
You may know it from movies and some discussion made available via internet, but it is the most widely used radiotelephone spelling alphabet in the world, used to clarify communication for maritime operations, domestic and international flights, and NATO Alliance Military Activities. The system is simple and it's assigning names to the 26 letters of the English language and making a slight variation of the names of English numbers.
The code was designed to eliminate problems that appear during communication when there is bad reception, a lot of background noise or people who have strong accents. Often, letters that sound similar, such as "M" and "N" or "F" and "S", are confused, and this can be critical when someone is giving information to emergency responders.
The 26 words assigned to the letters and their Morse Code equivalents are as follows:

Numbers from 0 to 8 are spoken normally, however, the number 9 is spoken as NIN-ER to avoid confusion with the number 5. A hyphen (-) is referred to as a DASH, a period (.) is referred to as a STOP, and a decimal point is referred to as a POINT or as a DECIMAL.
